4 Reasons I Love Green Smoothies

You’ve read the women’s magazine articles. You’ve heard the “official” dietary guidelines.

They say things like:

“Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including dark, leafy greens.”
and
“Cook at home most nights of the week, and eat an assortment of raw fruits and vegetables – a salad is a great choice!”

Yes, obviously, these are ideal choices to make.

They most likely (at least until some NEW scientific study appears) optimize your health and give you the best-rounded intake of nutrients.

However.

I don’t live in an ideal world, do you?

Quite frankly, my world is the direct OPPOSITE of ideal. There are a number of factors that play into that, but the bottom line is this: life is unpredictable and complicated, AND I have limited resources in terms of time and energy.

So. Something has got to give.

This will look different for each of us, and it can easily change from season to season. For me, at this time, a somewhat lazy, “good enough” diet > giving up on this whole health and fitness thing.

 

Alright. Without further ado, I give you the reasons The Green Smoothie is my best friend.

  1. The Green Smoothie helps prevent Produce Regret (that’s a real thing, ask anyone attempting healthy eating)

 Produce Regret occurs when I make my weekly grocery trip. I meander through the produce section and am hit with delusions of grandeur.
In my head:

 

This week, I’ll cook SO many healthy meals (and the REST of my family will eat them too)! We will ALL consume that WIDE VARIETY of colorful vegetables people keep talking about. Maybe I’ll keep an accurate food journal and not be embarrassed…
 
Working from this line of thinking, I then purchase everything in the produce section, spending a large fortune instead of the usual small fortune.
 A week later, we’re back at the store. Roughly half of the fruits and vegetables didn’t make it into our mouths. So I’m ticked off at myself for failing at my goals (which were obviously SUPER realistic) AND wasting money.

 I HAVE FOUND MY BETTER WAY

(Note: you may disagree with this, because it’s definitely not perfect. That’s ok.)

 

These days, I still buzz through the produce section.
But now, I buy the assortment of fruits and veggies that I KNOW we will eat–mostly raw. We don’t really do that many cooked vegetables. (5 year-old Daisy eats carrots happily now! There is hope!). In addition to those, I buy a ridiculous amount of bagged raw spinach. Like, lots.

 

 Next, it’s over to the frozen aisle, where I get the biggest bags I can find of frozen strawberries, blueberries, and mango.
That’s it.

4 Reasons I Love Green Smoothies

Obviously, I buy some other groceries. I mean that’s it for our fruits/veggies portion. No Produce Regret. No rotting food in the fridge.
  1. The Green Smoothie makes life easier (and I’m slightly lazy when it comes to food)

 Currently, I drink two green smoothies a day – one before lunch and one before dinner. They each take me 5 minutes or less to assemble, and if I’m headed out, it can go with me. Done.

 

 Now, if you’re like me 5-6 years ago, you might put WAY more complicated ingredients into your smoothie, especially if it’s supposed to REPLACE a meal. Then it may take 7 minutes instead of 5.

 

  1. The Green Smoothie tastes good.

 I don’t really like salad. I just don’t. I’ll eat a Caesar chicken salad out at a restaurant, when it’s covered in dressing and I didn’t have to make it. That’s about it. What makes me really enjoy a salad makes it not-really-a-salad.

 

In my green smoothie, I get a LOT of nice, leafy greens TWICE a day, and some fruit, AND I enjoy it.
  1. The Green Smoothie is my favorite “diet” tool.

I hate diets. I hate the connotations. I hate the temporary, quick fix, deprivation feeling. However, sometimes the word is necessary in the right context. Such as…

 

Drinking a green smoothie before each meal helps me maintain a healthy DIET, because I’m not famished enough to make bad food choices after drinking it. We’re all more rational when we’re slightly less hungry.

 

This one is a no-brainer, because maintaining a mostly healthy diet leads to a healthier, happier me! A healthier me has more energy to give my family and do the jobs I’m called to, which is the point, after all.
 4 Reasons I Love Green Smoothies

 

By now, I’m pretty certain you want to be friends with Green Smoothie too.

With that in mind, I’m going to share some of my favorite recipes below. I have a couple of [ridiculously simple] combinations I use myself, and I’ll also link to my Pinterest board, dedicated only to The Smoothie.

 

My Current Green Smoothie “Recipes” (Can I even call them recipes?)

 

SUPER Simple Fruit and Spinach Smoothie
Raw Baby Spinach
(TIP: to get in extra spinach, blend up a little with water, then add some more, and–if you’re feeling extra healthy, some more. THEN blend in your fruit.)
Frozen blueberries and/or strawberries
Water

 

This is the one I use most often. Fast, easy, to the point.

 

Add Some Protein Smoothie
Raw Baby Spinach
(TIP: to get in extra spinach, blend up a little with water, then add some more, and–if you’re feeling extra healthy, some more. THEN blend in your fruit.)
Banana (fresh or frozen)
2 TBSP Peanut Butter
Water or Almond Milk

 

This one obviously isn’t as low-calorie, but we gotta have some calories and fat in our lives too. 🙂

  1. I used to drink green smoothies all the time. I got away from it because I got bored with it. I may have to try these ideas. You are right, it is a great way to prevent Produce Regret! (I know it well)
